Frequently asked questions about flap profile seals
What is a flap profile fridge seal?
A flap profile fridge seal is a type of door gasket that can be identified by the flat flap at the base of the seal profile. This flap sits underneath a metal retaining plate fitted around the edge of the fridge or freezer door.
During installation, the metal plate is fixed back into place using screws, rivets, or staples, which clamp the flap securely and hold the seal in position. This fixing method creates a firm and reliable seal around the door.
How do flap fridge seals work?
Flap fridge seals work by creating a tight barrier between the fridge door and the cabinet frame.
When the door closes, the flexible seal compresses against the frame, preventing cold air from escaping and warm air from entering. The flap itself is secured under a retaining plate. The magnet here holds the door closed.
Do flap gasket seals work well?
Yes, flap gasket seals are a reliable and effective sealing solution when properly installed.
Because the seal is physically secured with a retaining plate, it is less likely to move or loosen over time. This makes flap seals particularly suitable for busy commercial kitchens, cold rooms, and refrigeration units that are opened frequently.
What is a seal profile?
A seal profile refers to the shape of the gasket when viewed from the side (cross-section).
Different refrigeration systems use different profile shapes to ensure the seal fits correctly into the door frame or fixing channel. The profile determines how the seal attaches to the door and how it compresses when the door closes. Identifying the correct seal profile is essential when ordering a replacement gasket.
How are flap seals different from other fridge seal types?
Flap seals differ from other fridge door seals mainly in how they are fixed to the door.
- Flap and Lip seals – Fix around a plate that is screwed onto the door.
- Dart profile seals – Push into a channel using a fixing “dart” that holds the seal in place.
- Magnetic clip-in seals – Designed to clip into a retaining channel around the door.
- Retained seals. At The Seal Company, for example, we also offer retained seals. These coldroom seals (5003, 5006, 5008) are attached to the door using plastic retaining strips that are screwed onto the door
Flap seals are particularly useful for refrigeration systems that require a secure, screw-in fixing method rather than a push-fit seal.
How do I order a bespoke flap profile seal from The Seal Company?
Ordering a bespoke dart profile seal is straightforward:
- Identify the seal profile. If you have your Make and Model number, simply use our search bar. If you do not know the Make and Model or you do not get a match, of your fridge or freezer, identify your seal by cutting a section of your existing gasket and matching the cross-section to the profiles listed.
- Confirm the dimensions, including the seal height, width, and dart fixing size.
- Select the matching dart profile
- Provide the door measurements so the seal can be manufactured to the correct size.
Can you buy replacement fridge door seals?
Yes, you can. Replacement fridge and freezer door seals are widely available, and at The Seal Company, we specialise in supplying both branded and made-to-measure seals to fit almost any model. Whether you need a standard size or a custom cut, we can provide the right seal to restore your appliance’s efficiency.
How do I know what door seal I need?
The easiest way is to check your fridge’s make and model number, usually found inside the door or on the rating plate. Or, use our guide on how to identify your seal. From there, we can match the correct seal. If you’re unsure, you can also measure the length and width of your existing seal or send us a photo – our team will guide you to the exact replacement you need.
Are all fridge door seals the same?
No, fridge door seals are not all the same. They vary in size, shape, profile, and fitting style depending on the appliance brand and model. Using the wrong seal means your fridge won’t close properly or stay airtight. That’s why we provide tailored seals designed to match your specific fridge or freezer.
