Frequently asked questions about lip profile seals
What are lip profile fridge seals?
Lip profile fridge seals are a type of door gasket commonly used in commercial refrigeration. They are similar to flap profile seals, but instead of having a flat flap at the base, they feature a lip at the end of the flap.
This lip helps hold the seal securely in place during and after installation, ensuring the gasket remains correctly positioned around the fridge or freezer door.
How are lip profile seals installed?
Lip profile seals are installed by securing the lip behind a metal retaining plate or strip fitted around the edge of the fridge or freezer door.
During installation, the retaining plate is fixed back into place using screws or rivets, which clamp the seal firmly to the door. This method creates a strong fixing and ensures the gasket remains stable even with frequent door use.
What is the structure of a lip profile seal?
A lip profile seal typically consists of several key components:
- Sealing section – the flexible part that compresses against the cabinet frame when the door closes
- Flap with lip – the fixing section that sits behind the retaining plate and holds the seal in position
- Magnet chamber – many lip profiles include a chamber designed to hold a magnetic strip that helps the door close tightly
What materials are lip profile fridge seals made from?
Lip profile fridge seals are usually made from durable, flexible materials such as rubber or PVC. These materials allow the gasket to compress easily when the door closes while maintaining its shape over time.
Many lip profiles also include a magnet chamber, which can hold a magnetic strip to help pull the door firmly against the frame and improve sealing performance.
How do I order a bespoke lip profile seal from The Seal Company?
Ordering a bespoke dart profile seal is straightforward:
- Identify the seal profile. If you have your Make and Model number, simply use our search bar. If you do not know the Make and Model or you do not get a match, of your fridge or freezer, identify your seal by cutting a section of your existing gasket and matching the cross-section to the profiles listed.
- Confirm the dimensions, including the seal height, width, and dart fixing size.
- Select the matching dart profile
- Provide the door measurements so the seal can be manufactured to the correct size.
Is it worth replacing fridge seals?
Yes. A faulty seal lets cold air escape, forcing your fridge to work harder, wasting energy, and raising bills. Replacing the seal restores efficiency, keeps food fresher for longer, and extends the life of your appliance. It’s a simple, cost-effective fix compared to buying a new fridge.
How often should fridge seals be replaced?
There’s no set timeframe, as it depends on use and wear. For home fridges, seals usually last 5–10 years, but you should replace them sooner if you notice cracks, gaps, mould, or doors not closing properly.
In commercial kitchens, seals often wear much faster due to heavy use and cleaning, sometimes needing replacement every 12 months.
Can you replace fridge seals yourself?
Yes, many people fit replacement seals themselves with basic tools. At The Seal Company, our made-to-measure seals are designed for easy installation and come with fitting guidance. Visit our guide for step-by-step instructions.
How much does it cost to replace a refrigerator door gasket?
The price of a replacement fridge door gasket varies depending on the size and profile needed. At The Seal Company, our lip profile seals are made-to-measure for a perfect fit, so costs will differ by appliance. Replacing a gasket is far cheaper than buying a new fridge and helps lower energy bills by keeping the cold air in. For an accurate quote, just provide your model details or measurements and we’ll confirm the price.

- General maintenance and cleanliness of the fridge
- Care of the door/seal by its users
